Terms of service

Last updated: April 25, 2026

These terms ("Terms") govern your use of Storyo (the "app", "we", "our", "us"), built by Eric Kunz. By installing or using the app, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

If you have any questions, write to ericjkunz@gmail.com.

1. Who can use Storyo

Storyo is intended for parents and legal guardians to read with their children. To create an account or manage a subscription, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old (or the age of majority in your jurisdiction).
  • Have the legal authority to upload any photo you provide and to grant the licenses described below in Section 7.

The app is not intended for children to operate independently. Children should use the app only with adult supervision.

2. The service

Storyo lets a parent add their child's photo and name, then renders that child as the protagonist of illustrated stories using AI image generation. Stories are delivered via our backend; new stories are released periodically.

We may update, change, or discontinue features at any time. We will try to give reasonable notice of material changes that affect paying users.

3. Accounts

The app creates an anonymous account when you first launch it, and Sign in with Apple is required to finish setting up the app. Signing in makes the account portable across your devices and lets you keep your subscription if you reinstall the app. You are responsible for keeping your Apple ID secure.

4. Subscriptions, free trials, and billing

Storyo offers an auto-renewing subscription with monthly and annual options. A free introductory trial may be offered for new subscribers.

  • Billing. All payments are processed by Apple through your iTunes / Apple ID account. We never see your payment details.
  • Trial conversion. Free trials automatically convert to paid subscriptions at the end of the trial period unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
  • Renewal. Subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each period unless cancelled at least 24 hours before renewal.
  • Cancellation. You can cancel any time at Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your device. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current paid period.
  • Refunds. Apple handles refund requests through the App Store. We cannot issue refunds directly.
  • Quotas. A subscription includes the right to personalize a fixed number of books per billing period. Re-reading a book you already personalized does not count against the quota. If you exceed the quota, you can continue to re-read previously personalized books, but new personalizations will require waiting for the next billing period.

5. What you can try before subscribing

An active subscription is required to personalize any story. Before you subscribe, the app draws your child once in our house style so you can see the result — a character preview, limited to one drawing per child plus one redraw. Free trials, where offered, include a limited number of personalized books as described at the point of purchase. We may change what is available before subscribing over time.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the app to create content involving anyone other than your own child or a child you have legal authority to depict (e.g., never upload photos of someone else's child without their parent's consent).
  • Use the app to generate sexual, violent, hateful, or otherwise harmful content. The underlying AI service has its own safety filters; we reserve the right to suspend accounts that attempt to circumvent them.
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive the source code of the app or our backend, except to the extent that applicable law forbids this restriction.
  • Use the service to compete with us, scrape our content, or train competing AI models on our generated images.
  • Resell, redistribute, or commercialize the personalized stories or artwork produced by the app.

7. Photos and the limited license you grant us

When you upload a child's photo — the main photo or any of the additional photos you may add — you represent and warrant that:

  • The photo is of your own child, or you have the legal authority and consent of the child's parent or guardian to use it.
  • You have the right to grant us the license described in this section.

You grant us a limited, worldwide, royalty-free license to:

  • Transmit the photos over a secure connection to our backend.
  • Send the photos to our AI image-generation provider (Google Gemini) for the sole purpose of producing the character drawing and the personalized story art you request.
  • Store the resulting character drawing and personalized art on our servers and deliver them to your devices.

This license exists only for the purpose of operating the service for you. We do not use your child's photos to train AI models, sell them, share them with advertisers, or use them for any other purpose. We do not retain the original photos on our servers — we keep only the generated artwork derived from them. We do not create or store a facial template, faceprint, or any other biometric measurement of your child.

You can revoke this license at any time by deleting the child profile or your account.

8. Ownership and rights

  • The app, its design, code, and original story text are owned by Eric Kunz and protected by copyright and other laws. You receive a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app for personal, non-commercial purposes while your subscription is active.
  • Your child's photo remains yours. The license in Section 7 does not change ownership.
  • Personalized artwork generated by the app is for your personal, non-commercial use within your family. You may take screenshots and share them privately with family. You may not resell or commercialize the personalized artwork or pass it off as the work of any human illustrator.
  • Story text (the words on each page) is our copyrighted content and may not be redistributed.

9. AI-generated content disclaimer

Storyo uses generative AI to create personalized illustrations. AI output is unpredictable. The illustrations may sometimes:

  • Render the child differently from how you expect.
  • Include minor visual artifacts.
  • Fail to incorporate the child convincingly on certain pages.

We make reasonable efforts to produce high-quality results but cannot guarantee any specific outcome. If you encounter a generated image that is offensive or clearly broken, please contact us so we can investigate.

10. Service availability

We aim for high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. The app depends on third-party services (Apple, Google Cloud, Google Gemini, RevenueCat) that may experience outages outside our control.

11. Termination

You can stop using the app at any time and delete your account in Settings → Delete account. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, particularly Section 6.

12. Disclaimers

The app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, except to the extent such warranties cannot be excluded under applicable law.

We do not warrant that the AI-generated content will be accurate, appropriate, or free of artifacts.

13. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability arising out of or related to the app is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) twenty US dollars. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages.

Some jurisdictions do not allow these limitations; in those cases the limits apply only to the extent permitted by law.

14. Indemnification

You agree to defend and indemnify us against claims arising from your violation of these Terms, particularly Section 6 (acceptable use) and Section 7 (photo licensing representations).

15. Apple-specific terms

These Terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support. In the event of a product warranty claim covered by Section 12, you may notify Apple, who may refund the purchase price. Apple is a third-party beneficiary of these Terms and may enforce them against you.

You also agree to comply with the App Store Terms of Service and Apple's standard EULA (the "Licensed Application End User License Agreement"), which apply alongside these Terms.

16. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes we will update the "Last updated" date at the top and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by email. Continued use of the app after the update constitutes acceptance.

17. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of [your state, e.g., California], without regard to conflicts of law. Any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in that state, except where applicable law gives consumers the right to bring claims in their own jurisdiction.
